World Tourism Day will commemorate, this year, its 30th anniversary under the theme - Tourism: Celebrating Diversity. This year’s theme focuses on the world’s cultural wealth and the important role sustainable tourism plays in revitalizing local traditions and making them flourish as they cross other cultures. World Tourism Day was instituted by the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in September 1979. The main purpose of World Tourism Day, commemorated on 27 September each year, is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values.

ONE LOVE REGGAE CONCERT – THE SUMMER SERIES

The One Love Reggae Concert Summer series continues next week in Negril. The series kicked off with its first concert on 2009 August 4 with reggae artiste Queen Ifrica, and a week later with Luciano at Negril Escape. The One Love Reggae Concert Summer series aims to expose visitors to Jamaica’s musical heritage. Singer, Etana, is expected to be the headline act on 2009 August 18.

Air Jamaica continues to offer travelers to the island, special fares this summer. From 2009 August 4-11, travelers can book steeply discounted fares from the U.S.A. to Jamaica on Air Jamaica, valid for travel 2009 September 6 – October 31. The roundtrip fares have a minimum two-day stay, and government taxes and fees are additional. The following gateways to Jamaica are included in the special offer - Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York.

US AIRWAYS LAUNCHES NEW JAMAICA SERVICE

Jamaica will have additional airlift this winter with the launch of US Airways’ new nonstop service between Phoenix, USA and Montego Bay, Jamaica. This seasonal service is set to begin on 2009 December 17, and will run through 2010 April 12. The new non-stop service will be operated using an Airbus A319 aircraft with seating for 12 in first class and 112 in the main cabin.
Montego Bay is the first nonstop Caribbean destination from US Airways’ Phoenix hub. US Airways customers are currently able to fly nonstop to Montego Bay from the airline’s East Coast Philadelphia and Charlotte hubs, as well as Boston. Travellers may book their flight through US Airways’ website at www.usairways.com, or purchase packages at www.usairwaysvacations.com.
TRYALL HOSTS ANNUAL SPORTS CAMP
The Tryall Club continues to host its annual Summer Camp 2009 with Cumberland University’s Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach, Bill Riddle and a crew of college pros. This year’s camp caters to children in the 7 – 10 and 11 – 15 age groups. Lessons are offered in golf, watersports and tennis. The resort has also gained the support of private tutoring company, Advantage Testing (AT) to provide pro bono tutoring to young Jamaican students between ages 9 and 11 attending the summer program.

WATA ROSE HALL TRIATHLON & WELLNESS FESTIVAL THIS OCTOBER
The 2009 WATA Rose Hall Triathlon & Wellness Festival is set to take place on 2009 October 31. This challenging Triathlon is unique of all other sporting events in Jamaica and will feature a 1,500 meter swim, a 40k cycle segment, and a 10k run culminating at Cinnamon Hill Golf Course located at the Rose Hall Resort & Spa, A Hilton Resort. The Wellness Festival will bring together leading fitness and wellness professionals from Jamaica and the United States.

NDTC’S 47TH SEASON OF DANCE
The National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) celebrates their 47th season at the Little Theatre. Performances are now underway until August 23. The repertoire for this season’s performances includes traditional and new pieces choreographed by Rex Nettleford, Arsenio Andrade-Calderon, Clive Thompson and others. Dancers are accompanied by the NDTC Singers led by renowned Jamaican musician and singer Marjorie Whylie. Performances run from Thursday through to Sunday each week.

Sandals Resorts has partnered with Martha Stewart Living to launch Martha Stewart Weddings Program in the Caribbean. The Martha Stewart Weddings at Sandals Resorts will be available as of January 1, 2010. Guests will be able to book a Martha Stewart Wedding at any of the twelve Sandals Resorts or four Beaches Family Resorts starting in October 2009. In addition, the companies have agreed to introduce Martha Stewart Crafts classes for adults at Sandals Resorts and craft camps for families at Beaches Resorts in 2010.
