In general car rental companies away from the airports tend to be less expensive. You may be able to find slightly cheaper rates at US$25 in low season. High-season rates may begin at US$48 per day and can run as high as US$125, depending on the vehicle. Some car rental companies include unlimited mileage, while others set a limit and charge a fee for excess miles driven.

You may be able to negotiate to receive unlimited mileage if this is not automatically included.

Before signing, go over the vehicle like a fine-tooth comb to identify any dents and scratches. Make a note of each one before you drive away. You're likely to be charge for the slightest mark that wasn't noted before. Don't forget to check the cigarette lighter and interior switches which are often missing.

Most companies utilize modern Japanese sedans. A small sedan is perfectly adequate for paved roads in the resort towns. A big car can be a liability on Jamaica's narrow, winding roads. Most companies also rent 4WD vehicles, which are recommended if you intend to do any any driving away form the main roads and certainly for any backcountry exploring, where the roads can be terribly potholed and extra ground clearance may be required.
